We are working on firewood now. Yesterday, I went to town for the mamogram. I participated on Ontario breast screening program for over 7 years. I consider that is very important for women.

Thank you so much, SK. We are both so tired, but trying to get back to normal after nine months of chaos. Today we are going to the Titans game. It will be the first date we`ve had in a long time. ;-} Yesterday I cast on the Blue Sky Alpaca cropped cardigan pattern that Jayne made last year in the greenss Berroco Air. I needed some automatic knitting (good for the car ride too.) It will be a gift for oldest DD for Christmas, but I probably will give it to her right away since it`s perfect for fall weather. I never can wait to give gifts at the right time. ;-} What`s on your needles?

SK...i can picture your creek, snow, forest and gardens vividly. your word pictures are so beautiful. I am glad spring has begun for you and so glad you have water again. I`ve had to carry water from our creek too, to flush toilets, water animals, wash..etc. when our well pump goes out (each time we lose electrical power) hard, hard work. I hope you can enjoy a nice walk outside today and a warm up by the stove or fireplace with some tea and a new knitting project.

Les: we have this pump for many years. We use it to water our garden. We have a network of several hundred yards of hose to water our rock garden, shady garden, all the garden around the house, and up 100 yard to the garage nearby asparagus garden.... It is a heavy duty pump. We even have several hundred yards of hose from waterfall to my garden running by gravity. It drips non stop onto a big flat rock next to my rock garden. Because it was decorated with all kinds of drift wood, people always surprise where the water come from.

Bets: we have this well for over 20 years. We always insulate the well with straw around. And then put all the cuttings and braches on top, make it looks like a beaver house. Somehow, this year, northern side of the well is completely exposed to the element. I don`t know why? We have a very good source of water from the rock, people around without water in the dry summer, we have ice cold good mineral water. We just have to be careful next winter.

Oh my goodness,SK! You and BB must have felt Eskimos cutting a hole in the ice. That`s very hard work! But worth it if you have water.

I did not knit on my shawl much yesterday, worked on taxes. Maybe tonight when I finish taxes, I`ll get back to nupping. ;-} Funny we both used something like cotton and hemp for the Swallowtail when we both love wool and other fibers best. :-}

Benne: We were working outside in the warm sun entire day. We used axe to cut a hole in the creek (the ice was over a foot thick). We put the pump in, and it is pumping. The creek started running first time late afternoon yesterday. The water runs on the top of the ice because of the warm temp, all the snow from miles and miles of forest is melting in a hurry and roaring down. I asked BB why do we need a hole, the creek is running. He said that the pump has to be submerged in the deeper water, that`s why a hole is needed. Now, we have creek water.
Our well is still frozen, might take a while, I think. We will insulate our well better this summer, so it will not happen again.
I was so tired yesterday, went to bed at 7pm and got up early this morning and finished the edging and bind off. Will block the shawl today. I wish it was knitted with BS or BC. The cotton is really not for a swallow tail. SK

Thank you, SK. It is a tree that volunteered after I put up a bushel of peaches in the freezer several years ago. I carried the peels and pits and threw them out by the barn figuring some little critter would like a peach. :-} One hardy little peach seed took root and grew and is now over 10` tall. It had peaches last year for the first time. I was so surprised. :-}

I`m so glad you had a day in the sun. It must feel glorious to have those temperatures after your hard winter of snow and ice. I hope you have water soon!

Thanks, Alice, I will try that if I run into trouble. When I tried the purl 5 together, I didn`t have trouble with it. Of course, that was on the practice piece. ;-} I really think it`s due to the new addi lace needles I`m using and that the hemp is a little wiry.

Benne, for the purl 5 together, did you try: slip 4 stitches onto right hand needle, purl the next stitch, pass the 4 slipped stitches, one at a time, over the stitch just purled and off the needle. As long as I do them all the same way, the decreases look fine. I can keep a more even tension than with trying to move five stitches at once.

No knitting at all yesterday, SK. Thom and I sat on the front porch yesterday evening and talked and watched the birds and ducks. Today, I knit, will finish the first chart and decide if I am going to do another set of repeats for size. I tried the nupp stitch a few days ago and the purl 5 together. I managed them in practice, let`s hope I can do them on the shawl. :-}

Hi SK! I`ve been a little puny the last few days with little energy but I`m on the way back now. :-}

I spent today with Marge. She gave me a bird feeder just like hers. She said, "I want you to have a feeder like mine so you can watch the birds and remember the days we spent together watching the birds at my feeder." I am without words to describe how I feel right now.

SK, I would have loved to be in that canoe with you! There`s magic in canoes. I could use a little magic right now.
Marge is failing very, very fast. She is now too weak to walk at all, even with a walker. I stayed with her the other day while family ran errands, kept appointments, etc. and I had to pick her up in my arms to take her to the bathroom. She has a wheelchair now and that is much safer for her and us. She is on some pretty heavy pain meds and the morophine pump is not far off. She is alert and still laughs and smiles but doesn`t talk much. And her favorite gown is one I took her to wear. It`s a nightshirt, white with bright green alligators all over it. :-}

Libby, Cate is right, the skeins are very helpful when deciding on a a yarn. I knit up the little skeins and see how the yarn acts and feels. I don`t think the subscription counts against the yarn diet. It`s a way of refining your purchases. Was that enabling too blatant??? ;-}

Benne: I got myself 20 balls of Paris, plus the pattern book. In less than 10 minutes, it went down from 50+ to 18. Hope Amy got hers,too.
I keep telling myself that I don`t drink, I don`t smoke, I don`t wear jewery, I don`t use perfume.... I deserve some good yarn. I should not feel bad. BB picked the color for me. I told him I want two sweaters in two colors, but he said he likes only Paris. So, 20 balls of Paris on my way.

I received a tanalizing brown envelope with foreign stamps on it yesterday. I sat in the car at the mailbox and ripped it open. And what was inside? An absolutely gorgeous Branching Out scarf in aubergine baby silk! It is so perfect and soft and lacy, I wanted to wear it with my sweatpants and flannel shirt. :-} I`ll wear it often, with my matching BS lacy socks, and think of you every time I wear them. Glad your samples arrived. It was hard to describe them to you in email. Isn`t that last one interesting? I got some of the CE patterns too. Very nice cable patterns. I love a sweater with pockets, I`ll bet you figure out a way to add them. I`ve been looking at the Rebecca pattern you suggested. It looks so comfortable, and very pretty. I`ll bet, except for height, we wear the same size, so I think that`s one for my to do list. I`m going to take a pic of my shawl and send it in tomorrow. I`m pleased with it and Thom thinks it`s beautiful. Nice to have our guys admire our knitting. :-} As long as he stays out of my stash. HA!

Benne: I got the samples today. I like the last offer. I got the Knitter`s Magazine also. Plus, a white box with some CE patterns and Berroco Glitz. I got the candy something, can be knit together with HW red maple. I got a CE pattern for CE zoom - the traveling vine, I think. I am going to start that with zoom tomorrow.The pattern has no pockets, I am thinking whether I can add pockets or not. The cable sweater is all done and put away. BB thinks that fits me very well, not too big and not too long.

Oh, SK-

I bought ONE child`s sweater`s worth-I had to guess on the yarn amounts. I want to make a specific Dale of Norway sweater, and have no idea how much is required-I`ll probably be making socks with the extra-and they won`t be pretty. I bought the charcoal, the while, the biscayne (so pretty) and 1 pumpkin spice for contrast. Hope I bought enough, hope I don`t have trouble finding the pattern (it`s not out yet.) I need to behave myself this month too.

Benne: good to hear from you. I was getting worry. I started the jewel FX with dark blue bag wool. 140 sts lengthwise and size 13 needle. I am hoping it will look like stained glass effect.I will try to scan the WIP and the swatch for you tomorrow. We worked outside and watering the gardens up and down. Hi Shui Kuen,

I think a scarf from the Optik would be beautiful. I tried knitting the red up on size 11`s and 13`s US and I like it on the 11`s in stockinette. I tried using the mock Turkish stitch with it and I didn`t like that. I think I am going to make a very simple, stockinette shawl from the red monsoon Optik. I tried a couple of different mohairs with it and I didn`t like that either. The yarn is so pretty and has so much going on that I think, for my taste, the simpler the better. I have not knitted any of the jewel FX yet. It`s still in the box. :-} I`ll play with it a little and see if I get any ideas or any patterns come to mind. I liked Bri`s Triada scarf with the Optik a lot and think a capelet or scarf would be a wonderful use of the yarn. I`ve been swamped with outside things and haven`t been in the house much. I`ll take some time tomorrow and look at some magazines and patterns for us to talk about. That`ll be fun! :-}

Benne: I thought that you are on a trip. since you are not, tell me what is the best way of using optik. I got that yesterday, it is beautiful and the metallic is very gentle. I hang on my neck, it is not itch. In a change, Jewel FX is rough. I knit Jewel FX together with CE Sharon (mohair), still not very soft. Have not a clue what I should use it for. The color is beautiful. I saw a friend from Ottawa last year wearing a dark grey fisherman knit turtle neck sweater with a long long recycle silk scarf around and around the neck, it is so attractive. The jewel FX reminded me of her scarf. Should I use it alone. What do you do with yours?

Eileen: the first week, I was unable to turn my body in the bed and out of the bed. Doctor said take pain killer, put frozen peas on the back often and don`t sit too long and walk and move around. I am much better now.

I`m so sorry about your back, I can relate. I have herniated discs and they used to have me tortured. They`ve been good the last year or so, but then DH and I went to a baseball game a couple of weeks ago and the seats had no back support. I was in bed for days and couldn`t move! Can you take anything for it?? I hope it feels better soon. Give my regards to Andrzej!

I`ve missed you too!!! I`m so sorry to hear about your back. I know how painful that can be. I wish I could describe my physical therapy exercises to you so you could do them. They really helped me. I`ll try and find the sheet they gave me but it`s been years so I may not have much luck. One thing I do every morning is to lie flat on my back in bed and slowly pull my knees to my chest,letting the muscles stretch out slowly and getting everything back in alignment.

It seems that I have not lost my enabling touch! ;-} About that credit card thing, I think I`m in enough trouble on my own. lol SK, I can`t wait to see what you make with all that yarn. Your knitting is so beautiful and precise, just perfect. People should hire you to knit the stitch swatches for stitch encyclopaedias. But no, that would be a waste of your valuable knitting time when you could be making your gorgeous creations for us all to look at and ooh and aah. :-}

And there are fewer things more touching and heart-wrenching than an animal that is fighting for its life, or has just lost its fight, or that has put its trust and hope in you to help it through. Because animals, to me, are pure souls. I don`t mean pure like pristine or chaste, but pure as in complete and utter. You can see the soul without any of the detritus and mess that build up around human souls and cloud your view. And when a sick animal looks at you, not understanding its own pain, or able to voice what is going on, and trusts you even though it doesn`t have to, and doesn`t know that you can help it with food, meds, vets, etc. Well, that justs melts you heart, as it should.

We`ve had a number of kittens die on us, and DH and I have cried tears of pure sorrow over each one - how could we not, when we were so vested in keeping them alive, just like your hatchlings.

I have been working outside for three days now in my flowers and raking leaves. My lady slipper orchids are up about 3 inches tall and more pips than last year. I was thinking of you too as I worked. I wanted to pass along all my garden and animal news. I have been knitting at night but I am sooo sore from all that raking. And no snakes spotted so far! Of course, I wasn`t wearing my isotoners so they are waiting for that to come out. ;-}

Shui Kuen,

Benne was wearing so many layers of Cuzco, heating pads, and buffalo hides that she literally couldn`t bend her arm enough to operate the mouse on her computer.

Then she noticed a reflection in her monitor... something was moving outside the window behind her... something big... really big...

She painstakingly maneuvered her body, with all of its cumbersome layers, around to an angle where she could look out the window directly. Whatever had been moving was not moving any longer.

The landscape was still. Eerily still. From the tree branches just outside the window all the way to the field across the road, empty except for one rather small weeping willow and three rather large water towers. WATER TOWERS???!!!!???? THOSE WERE ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY NOT THERE YESTERDAY!!!!

At that point, Benne peeled of all the extra layers and sprang into action, tearing apart the water towers and cutting, then stacking, nice neat sheets of metal for pickup by Tony the mailman, for shipping to various parts of the world, for roofing materials, watering holes, armor, whatever people needed it for... She worked like a maniac, finishing the entire lot in just under two minutes, Two hot minutes.

No need for all that clothing now, Benne was on a roll. Does anybody need defending or have a boss who needs chewing-out, call her NOW, she`s ready to spread justice...

"Yes," she thought, "call me right now... or email me... oh, shoot, I haven`t actually checked my email in over a week... I should do that..."

And THAT`s what it took for you to get a reply from her!

I`ll bet you were on pins and needles until you got home. I got up at the crack of dawn so I wouldn`t miss it. I ordered raspberry, eggplant, indigo and bisque (for a casual cables cardigan for DMIL).
What a month is right! Now if I can get some of the Berroco, bliss! I used a 50 dollar voucher today on the alpaca. I have been eying the sapphire. We`re on an alpaca diet. lol

Hi Shui Kuen,

Thom built a lot of boxes and he put one back at the barn. The bluebirds immediately moved in and laid eggs. We knew the babies had hatched and were about a week old. Thom was working in the barn shop and noticed that the mother was not coming and going to feed the babies and the male was very distressed but not feeding the babies. They still did not have many feathers and needed to be brooded because it was a wet,cold spell (mide 40`s). We took the babies out of the box. There were five, one was dead. The were soaking wet and very cold. We held the babies in front of the heater and tried to dry them and warm them. All four survived and we started trying to figure out what to feed them. I checked my books and came up with ground round and raw eggs. I put it on a toothpick and fed them this until I could get mealworms to feed too. I lost one more a day or two later but three survived to fly off on their own to be real bluebirds. This process took several weeks.

I liked the yarn a lot for an occasional sweater. The texture of the yarn was nice and it behaved nicely even though it`s bulky. The thick and thin yarns are not my favorite to work with but they make a dashing effect. My most favorite yarns are those smooth, soft wools that feel like butter in your fingers as you knit.
