Och B, thank you v. much! Don`t know if I deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as Shui Kuen though! I *do* prefer more classic styles - esp the cables - but it could be more of a "yawn-let`s-change-the-record-Eileen" thing. It`s kind of what I`ve been doing for 20+ years. Actually, now I think about it, it`s probably the only area of my life in which I could be considered conservative, LOL. However, I have never used the recommended yarn for any project, and rarely use yarn that even approximates the same gauge for a given project - I just tweak lots.

I`ve been trying to break out of the mould, though - doing more lace recently, felting, and socks (even though I hate them), and things like knitting the sleeves from the body down on the sweater I`m finishing now.

Dunno though - I still like to stick to the one type of needle (addis 14" straights), hate circulars, get sent to the fair by fair isle and colourwork (I used to do it more when I was younger, but seem to have lost the will somewhere), hate fuzzy yarns and anything novelty - unless it`s shiny of course (and then it`s not my fault, I`m just programmed not to be able to resist)!

I always think of Shui Kuen as the standard of knitting perfection to which all else should be compared, LOL.

I think of you and MacChick as the same type of knitter - always experimenting, putting together weird concoctions of yarn and projects that look wonderful, of course! Trying new methods of this and that, top down, dyeing, etc.

Theresa is just a nut with very small needles - I think when Benne and I watched her (with a mixture of awe and disgust) knitting plain stockinette with sewing thread and size 0000 needles in Maryland, we should have let the water towers get her, but we`re too kind hearted for that. Seriously though - between that and wanting to call her child after garden vegetables, she`s very lucky that she`s still free to roam the streets...

LOL, only joking T-Wee! Don`t be poking me with your itsy bitsy needles, I didn`t mean it!!

Eileen.

I would go for the delusional, to which my yarn closet and an order for Baby silk and the cable and lace pattern attest. The concepts of what I can actually do and what I want to do, rarely collide. I`m getting a little better at realizing that just because I like a particular yarn and a particular pattern that said yarn will not always compress or enlarge to meet the gage requirements of the pattern. I`m also getting better at realizing that something is wrong and is not going to get better by the process of making an entire piece and that if I am going to have to rip out that it is better to do it halfway through a sleeve than all the way through a sleeve, and even if it means re sewing all the seams and reknitting the color if the neck is low enough DD#1 won`t wear it, better to do it than give it to her and fuss when she is constantly pulling at the neck. Someday I will make an entire sweater without ripping out any of it...Daryl

Wow, y`all are REALLY hard on yourselves! I figure knitting`s pretty much like cooking-some recipes are keepers, others you know enough to stay away from, and at my house "Honey, would you throw that recipe away" is a valid request.

I have a current favorite pattern (the Bold Diamonds vest) which I dearly love, but am running out of subjects to make it for.

Have you looked at Lana Grossa`s website lately? They got rid of some of the free patterns (;-((, but I think there are some good patterns on there.

Bets

Well, I am not a brave knitter. I rarely stray from the pattern and although I don`t use the exact yarn of the pattern I try to be close. I am afraid of messing up. But, I love rich colors. And I really love getting nice yarn cheap-thanks Elann! I also don`t really knit for myself that much. I like giving gifts instead. I am now working on a felted pillow for DH and I did my first attempt at designing a logo to go in the middle but it didn`t quite look the way I imagined so I have frogged about 4 times and have settled on stripes instead. Perhaps I will save my logo making for something small like a hat.

Kim

Good question. I end up changing most patterns because I can`t help it :-) My friends and I all seem to like fairly plain things so I end up using the wool and stitches to keep me interested. I do try to make fairly classic styles - I don`t knit fast enough to want to make something that is a fad. Small items are another matter & with those I go fairly wild. I do like to try new things and can`t resist something like the Kitty Pi (BTW, my neighbor`s cat loves hers).
cate

well now i dont really know what kind of knitter i am. but i can tell you that i`m not a lace knitter. I dont think that i`m gonna tackle anything smaller gague than socks and i`m definately not gonna do a sweater in sock yarn. that would definately take FOREVER. Lately I have been liking to try "new" styles of knitting ie: moebius and socks on 2 circs. Now i have a teddy bear on the needles for my friends` kids` birthday. the next is for Karolyn. but i guess for the stuff that I knit for me, I really like the classy clean lines yet it still has to be hip and cool.

Libby

After reading Carrie`s posts about knitting lace gloves, and looking at the project on my needles (yes, I am taking a break from staining woodwork at the shop) I`ve been ruminating about the different styles of knitting that we see here.

I looked at the mohair top down cardi (in puhpul, for DGD) I am making, and I RESISTED the temptation to go bananas with it-there are only 3 yarns, 2 are scraps I bummed from Pat. On this one, I want to play up the buttons (beautiful pewter kitties!) I plan to use. Most of my things can best be described as a train wreck-I`m the one outside staring at the sun-I always have a mish-mash of fibers and patterns, I rarely follow patterns to a docile finish.

This is opposed to Shui Kuen and Eileen, who usually do BEAUTIFUL, classic things out of really GOOD fibers. Kim works in the same style, and I think Pat does, too.

Chick always stuns me, she takes things and throws them on their side, wrestles them to the ground, and then--WOW! Where did THAT come from?

So ladies, what kind of knitter are you? Benne, we already know you are the attention getter, you flirty little miss (you should hear what Mark said about THAT episode!) Jean is kind of a Renissance knitter-she does some of everything. You are constantly giving and are unconcerned with reward, you simply want others to love knitting as much as you do. If someone wants to knit miles of novelty yarns, you are there for them. Since I`m a Pisces, I had trouble answering the questions because portions of each answer applied to me. HA! Don`t you think there`s a little of each category in all of us? We refuse to be categorized, we have lots of faith otherwise we`d never cast on or buy the first skein of yarn, we`re all full of hope and belief in ourselves that we can make something wonderful from a piece of string and a couple of sticks, we have a love of adventure and determination to get it right, intellectually curious because we are always seeking to improve our skills, generous because many of us knit for others, and we are doing something because we love doing it, Now that I think about it, knitters set a pretty high standard for human behaviour! ;-}
Benne
