Heather,
I had to look that up, I was also curious. According to Webster, it is a piece of cloth or something else used to protect the back or arms of chairs, etc., from hair or hand oils - something to that effect...
Actually I do remember that kind of thing being used in old ladies`houses (that`s my recollection, no offense meant) when I was little. The ones I remember were typically made in crochet. I had no idea they had a name!
Marta

OMG!!!!! That`s an incredible site!!! It`s like having someone re-release the original, in modern language, and with pictures of knitted samples of each stitch or pattern... and they all load fast even on a dial-up connection!

I hope that site never goes away. I am half tempted to print a massive copy of everything, just in case, but I would never have that much time... what a find!!!!

Thanks for sharing that!!! I hope everybody here checks it out!!!!

Point Mousse had listed a lionk a little while baqck to a document she had found in her college library catalog. It was for a needlework book from 1891 called "Homework". Interestingly enough I just found a website that has an updated "translation" of it. What I find interesting is that she has provided a sample of the stitch pattern. Here`s the link for those that are interested in checking it out:) http://www.knitting-and.com/homework/knitindex.html
Heather
