Hi Bets,

Thought I`d throw in what my dear friend (82) told me she liked in necklines. She said she like something that comes up pretty far because - well, we all know why. I also think the Outback might irritate her skin if it`s worn next to the skin. It`s soft but there could definitely be an itch factor.
B2

Hi!

Thanks Marion-I have the pattern in my room even as we speak, I will go look at the schematic! Was my instructor right? Does it make a big difference in the fit of the garment? I was a little puzzled by this-he made it sound like you would have a closer fit, which I wasn`t really seeing because the overall area is the same (the shape is the same as a drop shoulder. I guess that`s what I`m getting at!) I had planned on 3/4 sleeves, because that arm length is not critical-even on short old me, there is a good 9" in between elbow and wrist.

Les, I will also take a look at that pattern-that`s for Salsa, if I remember correctly...

b

Bets
If you cast off 2 inches of stitches for the modified drop shoulder on each side of back and front, the shoulders will be the same 2 inches narrower on each side, which will make a big difference to the fit. 3 inches would be narrower, and 4 inches even more so. On the `Magic Grid` in the spring Knitter`s, the cast-off`s for the middle size came to 4 inches each side, and it`s fine.

Watch the sleeve length - arms do not grow along with girth.

Alice
Salt Spring Island

Oh, I like that one in the mauvey/plum. Looked for aurora print yarn to see it but couldn`t find it (googled)

For your MIL, I was thinking that the outback altho very very soft would still have itchiness and would need something worn underneath. Re shoulder lines,Mom chooses anything that fits in the shoulder and doesn`t have too long sleeves (narrow shoulders = longer sleeves). What about the sweater two pics below the mauvy/plum one - an open short cardiin the hot pink - would be very nice in the outback if the guage is right. And, being open, would help if the mohair keeps MIL too warm.
I had better get the heck off this computer and get dying my shawl!!!
Les

I LOVE Audrey, and (you`ll laugh) actually bought Barbie pink yarn to make this for DD (she will probably get it for Christmas-and get this! She HATES the lace-Benne and I have discussed this pattern, which we think makes the top. Much eye rolling. I LOVE the pattern, but am afraid to put that much body ribbing on a REALLY busty girl. (Ok, that and I wanted an easier/quicker knit!)

I have Schachenmayr 68, which you can glimpse here: http://www.royalyarns.com/pbks/Schachenmayr/BK68.htm. In the middle of the page, on the left, there`s a mauvey/plummy top that I was considering. It`s made out of Aurora print, and the sleeves are slightly belled, which also may balance out the chest a little. Something to consider.

Let me go mosey over to RAM....Oh-hey, I`m going to go look for MY catalog, because the detail is too hard to see! I LIKE the pattern, but for myself (piggy girl that I am.) I like about 4 things on that page, and I had MANAGED to dismiss the whole book when it came in....thank you so much, enabler! ;-) Wonder where my catalog is?

On my MIL, she is very sensitive about her neck/collarbone area and tends to cover it up, because she doesn`t feel it`s attractive. I wasn`t planning for a blouse underneath-but I was planning to do the top 4 inches or so in a lacy slip-stitch cable to make that part of the garment 1) lacy and pretty 2)visually substantial and important, so the narrow shoulders balance the wider bottom. Absolutely yes, my MIL complains about things not fitting her in the shoulders if she buys them to fit her bum. The modified drop goes in like an "L" which is "supposed" to do away with some bunching at the pits (which is what an instructor said at a class I took last fall-he may be full of it, I don`t know). What kind of shoulder lines does your mom like?

Bets
